What’s an Off-Taker?
An Off-Taker is a residential or commercial user of electricity (like me) who signs up at no cost to effectively say, “yes, it’s OK if you consider me one of the electricity customers who uses (off-takes) some of the electric power produced at one of the local New York community solar farms nearby.” In the Bullrock Community Solar case in New York, as an Off-Taker I also enjoy a 10% discount in on my NYSEG electric rates, again, at no additional cost to me.
What’s in it for me?
By signing-up for free as an off-taker, I receive a 10% discount on the electricity rates I’m charged by NYSEG at no cost. So, for no money-out-of-my-pocket, each time I would have spent $100 on electricity, I’ll pay $90, just for being a Bullrock community solar off-taker. I continue paying my utility bill like I always have; my electric rates are just less because I’m a Bullrock Community Solar Off-Taker.
Who is Bullrock?
Bullrock is a solar company who builds and operates community solar plants on selected local farms in New York, and rewards off-takers like me who participate in the Bullrock community solar program 10% discounts on our electric rates (again, at no upfront or ongoing cost to me).
How does it work?
The Bullrock community solar plant products electric power (a bit in the summer than in the winter months, but nevertheless all year). As an off-taker, I continue to pay my monthly electric bill, and I get a discount on my electric of 10% in every month I participate as a Bullrock Community Solar Off-Taker. The Bullrock Community Solar plant is scheduled to start generating electric power by the end of December, 2018. So, I’ll start to see the electric rate discounts on my bill in January, 2019.
What’s in it for the environment?
Every New York off-taker who signs up for free to be a Bullrock Community Solar Off-Taker, helps us reduce dependency on fossil and nuclear fuel sources of electric power generation. Bullrock also only builds community solar in farm areas that are not designated wetlands, and has extensive experience ensuring the solar facilities have a relatively minimal impact on our environment.
Why Community Solar?
Bullrock Community Solar is effectively security in numbers and more publically widespread community benefits. Because Bullrock offers us to be Bullrock Community Solar Off-Takers at no cost, a much wider range of New Yorkers can take advantage of community solar benefits. Many more of us benefit because we don’t have to shell-out money to buy or lease the solar equipment and we still get the benefits of the 10% discounts on our NYSEG electric rates.
How long does it take before I start to earn my 10% discount?
The Bullrock Community Solar plant is scheduled to start generating electric power on the nearby New York farms by the end of December, 2018. So, I’ll start to see the electric rate discounts on my bill in January, 2019.
Are my earnings dependent on the weather?
As a Bullrock Community Solar Off-Taker I get the 10% discount on my electric rates throughout the year, regardless of whether it’s a cloudy or sunny time of the year. That’s the Bullrock New York Community Solar Guarantee.
I’ve always had the impression solar is more expensive. How is it that I can be a Bullrock Solar Off-Taker for free?
Solar companies must have off-takers (residential and/or commercial electricity customers) to “off-set” the amount of power production the community solar farms produce. To reward us as off-takers, Bullrock offers us a 10% discount on our annual electric rates, just for being a Bullrock solar off-taker.
I still don’t get how I avoid having solar panels on my roof or on my property and I still get the 10% annual average discount on the cost of my electricity?
Bullrock builds and operates the community solar farm, and I’m one of the off-takers. The panels don’t take up space on my property, and I still get the financial and environmental benefits of being a Bullrock Community Solar Off-Taker. Yes, I had to read though the benefits (and the no costs) before realizing the benefits of being a Bullrock Community Solar Off-Taker are both good and true (instead of too good to be true.)
